Lily Schlieman

Lily Schlieman is a Research Assistant with the Environmental Security Program at the Stimson Center. Her research focuses on Illegal, Unregulated, and Unreported (IUU) fishing in Southeast Asia and West Africa, and harmonizing domestic laws and regulations to prevent IUU seafood from entering the U.S. market. Prior to joining the Stimson Center, Lily was the Joseph S. Nye, Jr. National Security Intern in the Defense program at the Center for New American Security, where she helped run and conduct wargame analysis on potential future conflicts in the Indo-Pacific. She has also held positions at the East-West Center in Washington, Pacific Forum, and The Advocates for Human Rights. Lily is a Pacific Forum Young Leader. 

Lily is a Master’s student at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in Pacific Island Studies with a Graduate Certificate in Ocean Policy. Her thesis explores the intersections of local, subnational, national, regional, and international ocean law and policy in the Rapa Nui and Motu Motiro Hiva Marine Parks. She graduated from Macalester College with degrees in International Studies and Political Science. Lily was a four-year varsity athlete and senior captain on the Macalester Track and Field Team and ran as a graduate transfer at the University of Hawaiʻi.
