Join the Stimson Center and the Doha Forum for the launch of the 2020 Doha Forum report, Coping with New and Old Crises: Global and Regional Cooperation in an Age of Epidemic Uncertainty.
The event will unpack key analysis from the report, including global and regional responses to the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated financial, economic, and social repercussions worldwide. It will discuss how these outcomes intersect with pre-existing and emerging global challenges, such as climate change, violent conflict, cyber-attacks, and extreme poverty.
Most urgently, it aims to identify the priority elements and innovation ideas that both ensure a durable, green, and broad-based recovery from COVID-19 but also the revitalization of global institutions.
10 Years After: Remembering Operation Tomodachi Seminar Series
Join us for the first seminar in a series to reflect on the lessons learned from Operation Tomodachi that was implemented in response to the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake in March 2011. VADM Scott Van Buskirk (ret., USN), former Commander of the 7th Fleet, and VADM Hiromi Takashima (ret., JMSDF), former Commander of JMSDF Yokosuka Regional District, will reflect on navy-to-navy cooperation in Operation Tomodachi and discuss the lessons learned for future disaster response.
Through efforts like the Belt and Road Initiative, China finances an increasing number of development projects in South Asia. Some analysts view this venture as an opportunity for states to upgrade infrastructure, while others express caution, warning that these funds come with strings attached and may threaten states’ sovereignty.
In this virtual panel based on a series in South Asian Voices, Stimson’s online policy platform, contributors explore Sri Lankan, Nepalese, Bangladeshi, and Pakistani perspectives on Chinese financing, as well as its impact on the region as a whole.
