Ambassador Bloomfield sat down with Alain Le Roy, United
Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping, for this month’s Chairman’s Forum. Mr. Le Roy discussed the role of peacekeeping operations in the world today, as well as other topics related to international peace and security. Mr.
Le Roy was in Washington for the International Day of Peacekeepers,
which falls on May 29. The event, held on May 24, was co-hosted with the Better World
Campaign and the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area
(Peace and Security Committee).
The Chairman’s Forum is a strategic conversation that features respected opinion leaders in the foreign and security policy arena. Chairman’s Forum: Inaugural Stimson Event Opens
with former Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage
Ambassador Lincoln P. Bloomfield, Jr. sat down with former Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage last Tuesday, for the Stimson Center’s inaugural Chairman’s Forum. During this hour-long discussion, Bloomfield asked Armitage about a wide range of topics chiefly focused on the future role of the United States on the international stage. Armitage and Bloomfield also discussed impediments to a more effective approach to national security, as well as regional issues.
Highlights included:
- An analysis of the phenomenon of rising China, and why President Obama is in a better position than the People’s Republic of China’s President Hu Jintao.

The next forum will be June 29, when Ambassador Bloomfield will host Rep. Howard L. Berman, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
Hon. Richard L. Armitage was the 13th U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, the second-in-command at the State Department, from 2001-2005. He filled key diplomatic positions as Presidential Special Negotiator for the Philippines Military Bases Agreement and Special Mediator for Water in the Middle East from 1989-1992. President George H.W. Bush sent him as a Special Emissary to Jordan’s King Hussein during the 1991 Gulf War, and made him Special Coordinator of Assistance to the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union.
Ambassador Lincoln P. Bloomfield, Jr. is Chairman of the Henry L. Stimson Center, a Washington-DC based non-profit, non-partisan institution devoted to enhancing international peace and security. He served as the US Special Envoy for Man-Portable Air Defense Systems Threat Reduction from 2008-2009, and Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs from 2001-2005 among other positions in the State Department, White House and Pentagon beginning in 1981.
