Stimson Center Welcomes Six New Board Members

Washington, DC – The Stimson Center is pleased to announce the appointment of six new members to its Board of Directors: Norm Taplin, Steve Irwin, Kris Lin-Bonner, Monica P. Medina, John Hurley, and Désiré Feuerle. Each new member brings a wealth of experience and expertise to help advance the Stimson Center’s mission of promoting international security and prosperity.

“We are delighted to welcome such a breadth and depth of expertise to the Stimson Center Board,” said Brian Finlay, President and CEO of the Stimson Center. “These new members bring diverse backgrounds and a deep commitment to our mission. Their support is vital for Stimson’s continued success and growth and will further strengthen our impact around the globe.

The six new board members are:

Norm Taplin, a highly respected attorney in financial services and regulatory with a career spanning over 50 years. Taplin has advised federal and state officials, including prominent figures like former Secretary of State Alexander Haig and former Ambassador to the United Nations Bill Richardson. His leadership and commitment to community service are evident through his involvement in numerous boards and charitable organizations.

Steve Irwin, who brings a wealth of expertise drawing from over 20 years of experience in the defense and aerospace industries. As President of Avascent, Irwin has played an important role in shaping overall strategy and managing operations, driving client growth strategies across the firm’s portfolio. In his early career, Irwin served as a research associate at the Stimson Center.

Kris Lin-Bonner, a seasoned leader in corporate social responsibility and global advocacy bringing extensive expertise in sustainable development and social justice. As Executive Director of the Dr. Bronner’s Family Foundation and Chief of Grants Officer of the Migration Justice Initiative, Lin-Bonner has demonstrated a commitment to addressing pressing global challenges.

Monica P. Medina, a distinguished leader in conservation and environmental policy. As President and CEO of the Wildlife Conservation Society, Medina has spearheaded efforts to protect wildlife and wild places worldwide. She has extensive experience in government, international diplomacy, and nonprofit organizations, including serving in pivotal roles at the U.S. Department of State and the National Geographic Society.

John Hurley, a seasoned leader in the financial industry. As Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer of Cavalry Asset Management, Hurley’s focus is primarily on publicly traded technology companies for prominent institutions, universities, and family offices. More importantly, Hurley’s expertise extends beyond finance, serving on the board of trustees of the American Enterprise Institute, the Board of Directors of Business Executives for National Security, and the Stimson Center’s very own EastWest Council. He has extensive experience in track two dialogues between the U.S. and China, and several initiatives in the Middle East.

Désiré Feuerle, the visionary founder of the Feuerle Collection in Berlin, renowned for his innovative approach to art curation. Blending art from different cultures and eras, Feuerle offers a fresh perspective on art’s relationship across time and place, an asset in fostering global cultural and political dialogue.
