Stimson Center Launches Korea Program

Featuring  Jenny Town

Washington, D.C. – The Stimson Center is pleased to announce the launch of its Korea Program, which aims to promote greater understanding of relations between the United States and the Korean Peninsula and to address traditional and nontraditional security challenges emanating from the region. The program will build upon the foundation laid by 38 North, which has cultivated informed public policy debate about North Korea since 2010 and been housed at the Stimson Center since 2018.

Stimson’s Korea Program will work to address some of the most-pressing developments across the Korean Peninsula, with a focus on geopolitical shifts likely to have an increasingly significant impact on regional and global economic and security dynamics, from North Korea’s rapidly advancing nuclear weapons program, to South Korea’s leadership in commercial and military industries, and more. The program, in partnership with the Korea Defense Veterans Association (KDVA), will soon embark on a new year-long project, “The Global and Local Impact of the US-ROK Alliance,” that will engage communities across the U.S. in discussions about the status and future of the US-ROK (Republic of Korea, or South Korea) alliance and the various ways in which it impacts American life.

“The Korean Peninsula is home to both enormous opportunity and critical security threats that both reflect and help shape the international order. Understanding and effectively navigating these dynamics is important to managing peace and security in the region and beyond,” says Jenny Town, Senior Fellow and Director of the Korea Program and 38 North at the Stimson Center. “While Stimson has had a significant voice in North Korean affairs since 2018 through 38 North, we are excited to be able to expand our work on South Korea as well, to more closely examine the evolving bilateral relations between the US and ROK and increasing alliance cooperation on key global challenges. This transition could not come at a more critical time.”

Stimson Center President and CEO Brian Finlay added, “The launch of the Korea Program represents a pivotal moment for Stimson as we deepen our commitment to addressing complex security challenges through independent analysis, global engagement, and innovative solutions. The Korean Peninsula remains a focal point for global security, and our expanded efforts through this program will contribute to critical analysis and engagement needed to foster stability and cooperation in the region and around the world.”
