Clark Kent Ervin, director of the Homeland Security Initiative at the Aspen Institute, and former Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, joined us for a discussion on the current state of homeland security. Ervin argues that despite the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and accurate risk assessments, our intelligence-gathering, aviation, ports, land borders, mass transit and emergency preparedness still exhibit serious gaps that remain prone to exploitation. What are the most crucial gaps? What areas should we prioritize? How can individual citizens become stakeholders in preparing for and mitigating the impact of a possible future attack?
