In December this year, Denmark will host the 15th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Obama administration’s avowed commitment to address global warming has raised hopes that negotiations in Copenhagen can hammer out an effective agreement to succeed the expiring Kyoto Protocol. But the ongoing economic crisis may cast a shadow on the prospects for greenhouse accord, placing new burdens on the international community’s financial resources and policy-making capacities. Please join us for a discussion of Southeast Asian perspectives on Copenhagen and the future outlook for the global climate regime with Simon Tay.

Simon Tay is Chairman of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs. As chairman of the National Environment Agency from 2002-2008, he represented Singapore at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development and the 2007 Bali climate negotiations. A lawyer by training, Mr. Tay teaches international law and international environmental policy at the National University of Singapore and served three terms as a Nominated Member of the Singapore Parliament (1997-2001). In 2000, the World Economic Forum named him a “global leader of tomorrow”. Mr. Tay is currently Bernard Schwartz Fellow at the Asia Society in New York where he is examining US-Asia relations, global warming and environmental change, and political and economic developments in ASEAN and East Asian nations.
