Gabriel Weimann, Professor of Communication at the University of Haifa,
Israel, and former senior fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace, will
discuss the nexus between terrorism and the internet. “Terror on the
Internet,” reflects an eight-year research project to monitor terrorist
use of the net. Since 1998 the number of websites dedicated to
terrorism has grown from 12 to more than 4,800 today. Weimann will
discuss this sharp increase in the terrorist presence on the internet
and how terrorists use the internet for multiple purposes, including:
psychological warfare; publicity and propaganda; datamining (i.e.
scanning the internet for publicly available information to plan
terrorist activities); fundraising; recruiting and mobilizing
supporters; networking between different terrorist organizations;
sharing information, instructions, how-to manuals; planning and
coordination; and, cyberwar and cyberterrorism.
