Global Military Expenditures In Today’s Security Environment

Past

Shifting priorities, emerging security threats, internal political factors, rising and falling oil revenues, and increasing budget restraints brought on by economic austerity all influence annual global military expenditures. In-depth examination of these fluctuating dynamics provides a better understanding of future trends and potential areas of concern.

Each year, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) releases data on current trends in military spending. SIPRI’s Military Expenditure Database contains information on defense spending by almost all countries, and monitors broader trends that emerge over time. Drawn from open source documents, SIPRI’s database provides for analysis on the economic, political and security drivers that influence military spending around the world and offers insights into their implications for global peace, security and development.
