Robert J. Berg has joined the Stimson Center as a Distinguished Fellow, the Stimson Center announced today. Berg will lead Stimson’s new effort to rethink engagement with middle income countries around the world through an inclusive dialogue with key stakeholders in government, business, and civil society.

“Bob brings to us extraordinary insights and a record of pragmatism on global development issues following a remarkable career with the U.N., USAID, and the private sector,” said Stimson Center President and CEO Brian Finlay. “His track record of success in bringing together diverse actors to achieve meaningful outcomes brings Stimson’s efforts to engage across the security and development fields to a new level. We are thrilled to welcome Bob to the Stimson team.”

Berg has led a distinguished career of service in government, civil society, and the private sector. From 1965-1981, he was with USAID where he helped draft the landmark Basic Human Needs legislation and founded USAID’s Office of Evaluation. He has served as senior advisor to four parts of the United Nations: UNICEF, UNESCO, UNDP, and the Economic Commission for Africa. In these assignments he helped devise the first global summit to advance humanity, The World Summit for Children, and initiated the first U.N. system-wide program initiative. He has also chaired a donor OECD grouping, was Senior Fellow at the Overseas Development Council, Senior Advisor to the World Federation of United Nations Associations, and was President and then Chair of the International Development Conference. Currently he is Chair of the Alliance for Peacebuilding and is Advisor to the Board of the World Academy of Art and Science.

“It is a privilege to join Brian and his talented Stimson Center team,” said Berg. “Stimson has long set the gold standard bringing together business, government, and civil society to deepen ties and bring about solutions to common challenges. This new effort will continue in that spirit — building bridges of understanding with countries whose rising influence will shape the landscape of international affairs in the 21st century.”

Founded in 1989, the Stimson Center is a nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank devoted to addressing transnational challenges in order to enhance global peace and economic prosperity.
