Japan Visiting Fellows Program

Launched in 1999, the Stimson Center's Japan Visiting Fellows Program provides mid-career level Japanese security experts from government agencies and ministries, news organizations, and research institutions with the opportunity to conduct policy-oriented research in Washington, D.C. on issues that strengthen their understanding of U.S. security policy towards East Asia and U.S.-Japan security relations. The program encourages visiting fellows to strengthen their relationship with their counterparts in Washington, by conducting interviews and engaging in frequent exchange of ideas. By so doing, Stimson strives to develop an upcoming generation of Japanese security policy experts, who will help further deepen the U.S.-Japan security cooperation in the future. In this endeavor, Stimson also attempts to thicken the web of contacts among security specialists and policymakers more generally across the entire spectrum: American and Japanese, military and civilian, governmental and non-governmental.
