On October 10, the Stimson Center’s Environmental Security Program and the Embassy of Norway co-hosted a panel discussion on sustainable ocean opportunities at the Wharf in Washington, D.C. The event marked the launch of the Government of Norway’s ocean initiatives – including the High-Level Panel on Sustainable Blue Economy and as the host of the Our Ocean Conference in 2019. Norwegian Ambassador to the United States Kåre Aas welcomed guests to the panel, while State Secretary, Norwegian Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries, Daniel Bjarmann-Simonsen provided keynote remarks on Norway’s work to balance economic growth and sustainability. Following both, Environmental Security Program Director Sally Yozell moderated a panel discussion attended by Paul Doremus of NOAA, Jens Frølich Holte of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Elizabeth Kim of the Department of State, Brett Jenks of Rare, and Tamara Thomas of The Nature Conservancy.
