Aung San Suu Kyi and the peace process

If things happen as planned, Myanmar will hold the second 21st Century Panglong Conference by mid-March. Also known as the Union Peace Conference, it is modeled on the 1947 meeting between ethnic leaders and independence hero General Aung San, father of Aung San Suu Kyi, to discuss the formation of an independent Burma.

Like her father, Suu Kyi sees a sustainable peace agreement as her signature project, a grand plan to achieve national reconciliation between ethnic groups and the Burman-dominated national government.
