Stimson interns can expect a challenging and professional environment throughout their internship that will prepare them for full time employment in a professional setting. On a daily basis, interns work closely and consistently with program staff, including their respective program directors. At the close of the internship, intern supervisors are asked to prepare an evaluation of the intern’s performance, and interns are encouraged to evaluate their own experience.
At Stimson, we are committed to professional development. In addition to a variety of weekly programmatic and institutional events, we host a regular development series specifically for interns. This is one of many opportunities for interns to interact with Stimson management and senior associates; leaders in the public (government agencies, NGOs, other think tanks, graduate universities) and private sector (defense contractors, consulting firms); and other individuals who will help interns broaden their interests and skill sets.

Applications must include the following documents:
- Resume
- A cover letter explaining interest in the position, availability, and interest in a specific project or projects
- A short writing sample (no more than 5 pages)
Applicants will be interviewed over the phone, Skype, or, when possible, in person. Due to the volume of applications received, only those selected for interviews will be contacted. The selection process takes approximately one month following the deadline.

Compensation
Does Stimson pay interns?
Paid interns will be compensated at the minimum hourly wage in DC, which is currently set at $17 per hour.
Application
I submitted my application and I am wondering about the status? Unfortunately, due to the large volume of applicants, only those selected for an interview will be contacted. If you have not been contacted within one month of the close out date your application has not been selected.
I applied for the spring semester and was not selected. Will I be considered for the Fall program? Due to our application volume you must reapply for each semester.
I would like to apply for multiple internships at the Stimson Center. Do I need to submit my application more than once? Yes. In order for your application to be seen/reviewed by the correct person, you must individually submit your application materials to the specific positions you wish to apply for.
Do I need to submit letters of recommendation? We do not require letters of recommendation for our application process.
Duration of Internship
Varies. Interns are with us anywhere from 2-12 months.
Programs
I am interested in a specific program; however, I am not sure if they have an internship opening this semester. What should I do? Most programs have at least one opening every semester. If you do not see an announcement for the program you are interested in, the program is not selecting an intern at this time.
