Tracking the trade of dangerous chemicals with distributed ledger technology

International trade of chemicals that can be used to make chemical weapons has to be reported to international authorities. But too often, that reporting is incomplete, inconsistent, or wrong. MATCH is a prototype distributed ledger tool designed to reduce those data discrepancies and in turn reduce the risk of chemical weapons proliferation.

More about this project

Exploring and testing distributed ledger technology as an innovative solution to reconciling discrepancies in international trade of dual-use chemicals.

Giving front-line workers the tools to identify dangerous chemicals

Frontline border security and trade controls officers, as well as chemical industry employees, often struggle to identify whether a chemical could be used as a chemical warfare agent or precursor. Sometimes a single chemical can have dozens of names and lists of controlled chemicals often change.

Currently in field testing, the Nonproliferation Compliance Cheminformatics Tool (NCCT) solves this problem by putting chemical identification information into the hands of the people who need it.

Understanding China's "soft use of hard power"

Beijing’s evolving military capabilities and instances of coercive behavior have raised international concern. Yet it is essential for analysts and policymakers in the US, and globally, to discern between Chinese actions that threaten regional peace and stability and those that have the potential to strengthen and contribute to the rules-based international order.

Transparency brings new ideas and change to the Mekong region

The Mekong Dam Monitor, a groundbreaking near-real time remote sensing platform that tracks the impact of dams on the Mekong River, turned one in 2022.

Data shows that dams have exacerbated wet season droughts and inexorably altered the natural flow patterns of Southeast Asia’s most productive river. The MDM has also proven a useful early warning tool for communities to mitigate the immediate impacts of day to day upstream dam operations.
