The ongoing war in northern Myanmar pitting its army against the ethnic minority Kokang is a vicious mix of revenge and political brinkmanship. And as it generates tension and refugees across borders, it presents Beijing with no less a dilemma than it does Naypyitaw.

“Along the border, many of these ethnic groups have their brothers in (the Chinese province of) Yunnan,” says Ms Yun Sun, a fellow at the Henry L. Stimson Centre in Washington.
