Yun Sun, an analyst at the Stimson Center, a Washington think tank, noted that Gam Shawng, the commander of the Kachin Independence Army, had given an interview to China’s Global Times saying it was “no coincidence” that the Tatmadaw’s offensive came while senior officers in the US Defense Department were “secretly” meeting the Tatmadaw in Myitkyina.
