Stimson’s case study on the city of Lagos cited in the Guardian (Nigeria)

Although the tribunal nullified some aspects of the
population figure, there are still contentions from different quarters over the
census figure. As a matter of fact, the population figures credited to Lagos
metropolis are at variance with some projections made by the United Nations and
other multilateral agencies worldwide. For example, the United States-based
Stimson Centre listed Lagos as one of the 15 largest cities by 2025 with a
projected population of 16 million people.

Since 2006, various figures ranging from 160 to 200 million
people are bandied as Nigeria’s population by politicians and other interest
groups desirous of having a lion share in resource allocation since the country
uses population figures to share resources.
