Stimson appoints Joshua White to its South Asia program

The
Stimson Center announced today the appointment of Joshua T. White as
deputy director for South Asia programming.  In making the announcement,
Stimson President Ellen Laipson said, “We are delighted to have Josh White join
our team. His expertise on Islamic political movements will add a new
dimension to Stimson’s work in South Asia.”

Prior to joining Stimson, White served as senior advisor for Asian and Pacific
Security Affairs in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, a position he held
in conjunction with an International Affairs Fellowship from the Council on
Foreign Relations. While at the Pentagon he covered a wide range of defense
issues related to India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and the Department’s rebalance
to the Asia-Pacific.

White spent extensive time in South Asia, and has held short-term visiting
research fellowships at the U.S. Institute of Peace, the Lahore University of
Management Sciences, the International Islamic University in Islamabad,
Pakistan’s National Defence University, and the Institute for Defence and
Strategic Analyses in New Delhi. He has written widely, testified
before Congress, and served on U.S.-sponsored election observer delegations to
both Pakistan and Bangladesh.

He graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Williams College with
a double major in History and Mathematics, and received his Ph.D. with
distinction from The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in
Washington, DC.

Michael Krepon, co-founder of Stimson and director of Stimson’s South Asia
program, expressed gratitude about Joshua’s arrival. “He will bring
greater strength to Stimson’s work on nuclear risk reduction and deterrence
stability, while expanding our coverage to the conventional military balance in
South Asia and the impact of Islamic political movements on regional
security. Josh’s fieldwork in the region and language skills are huge
assets.”

Joshua can be reached at [email protected].  His Twitter
handle is @joshuatwhite.
