Alan Romberg comments on Chinese President Hu Jintao’s visit and its impact on U.S.-Taiwan relations

The State Visit of PRC President Hu Jintao will be rated as a success by both sides. Both leaders clearly sought to put the differences that exist–which were frankly acknowledged, especially in the realm of human rights–into a broader perspective about the overall importance of the relationship. Despite the expressions of concern from various quarters in Taiwan, there was no indication of any substantive change in the American position regarding any aspect of Taiwan policy, including arms sales.
