Energy and Russia’s Foreign Policy

Past

Dr. Anatol
Lieven
, Senior Research Fellow, New
America Foundation, discusses Russian foreign policy,
energy supplies and Russia’s relations with its neighbors. In recent months
Gazprom, the Russian state owned energy company dramatically raised the price of
gas for Russia’s neighbors – doubling the price of gas for Georgia. Last year
Russia cut off gas exports to Ukraine, in a bitter price dispute, leaving many
Europeans worried about the security of their energy supplies. The concerns are
heightened by the underlying political tensions between many former Soviet
states and the Russian government. What is the relationship between Gazprom and
the state? What role are energy supplies playing in Russia’s relations with its
neighbors? What impact does this have on regional stability and Russia’s
relations with the West?
