The Stimson Center announced today the appointment of Sameer Lalwani as Deputy Director for Stimson’s South Asia program. Sameer’s research will focus on crisis management, nuclear security, and national security decision making in South Asia. He will help devise Stimson’s online open courses on nuclear-related issues. Sameer joins Stimson’s Co-Founder and Senior Associate Michael Krepon, Research Associates Shane Mason and Julia Thompson, Visiting Fellow Faiqa Mahmood and Scoville Fellow Hannah Haegeland on the South Asia team.
“It’s a tremendous privilege to join Michael and the innovative team at the Center,” said Sameer Lalwani. “Stimson’s analysis has set the gold standard in efforts to reduce nuclear risk in South Asia. I look forward to joining Michael and the Center’s extremely talented team.”
Sameer received his doctorate from M.I.T’s Department of Political Science in 2014. His dissertation examined strategies of counterinsurgency and state consolidation in South Asia. He comes to Stimson from RAND, where he was a Stanton Nuclear Security Fellow. He has conducted field research in Pakistan, India, and Kashmir. Sameer received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley. He has been published in Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The New York Times, The National Interest, The Washington Post, Dawn, The Hindu, and elsewhere.
