Giffen Addresses a South African National War College Seminar, Pretoria
Alison Giffen
gave the opening remarks at a South African National War College seminar, on the
challenges of protecting civilians in peace operations. The seminar was
organized by the Institute for Security Studies and funded by the British Peace
Support Team, South
Africa and attended by officers studying at the
war college and other high-ranking military officials. Other speakers included
Prof. Jean-Marie Guéhenno, former Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping in
the United Nations; Major General Foster, Deputy Force Commander to MONUSCO;
Major General Mike Fryer, previous Police Commissioner in UNAMID; and Dr.
Louise Olsson, Uppsala University and Folke Bernadotte Academy. While in
Pretoria, Giffen
also spoke on a public panel, "Protection of Civilians: The impossible dream?"
also organized by the Institute for Security Studies.
