Opening Remarks by Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the United States

Panel One: Past and present-accomplishments and near-term challenges

In the first decade of the 21st century, the US-Japan alliance has undergone an unprecedented period of evolution.  Today, however, both sides seem to be overwhelmed by short-term challenges.  How can the two governments cope with these short-term challenges and prevent their having profound impact on the alliance?

Panel Two: Regional Perspectives

Leaders in the US and Japan argue that the US-Japan alliance is a cornerstone of peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region-a public good for the region, in other words.  But is such a view shared by the countries in the region?

Panelists:

Ambassador J. Stapleton Roy, Director, Kissinger Institute on China and the United States, Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars

Ambassador Chan Heng Chee, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Singapore to the United States

Moderator:

Alan D. Romberg, Distinguished Fellow and Director, East Asia Program, Stimson Center

Panel Three: Looking ahead-toward a re-energized partnership

While the near-term challenge should not be trivialized, it should be noted that the two countries have much broader agenda to tackle both regionally and globally.  How can the alliance be re-energized in a way that the two countries, while continue to work on the near-term challenges, are able to have forward-looking dialogue on the issues of shared interests?

Panelists:

Dr. Sheila Smith, Senior Fellow, Council on Foreign Relations

Mr. Tomohiko Taniguchi, Guest Scholar, Defense and Security Team, Sojitz Research Institute, Ltd.
