Though there has been much speculation about prospects for reconciliation in Iraq and the future of US involvement there, far less attention has been focused on the overall role of the United Nations going forward. Brookings vice president Carlos Pascual recently completed a paper, "The United Nations in Iraq," (Sept. 2007) examining a number of scenarios for future UN involvement in Iraq depending on the course of political developments there. At the same time, international organizations such as UNHCR and UNDP are engaged in dealing with ongoing challenges such as resettling and repatriating refugees, improving the energy infrastructure and alleviating poverty. Our discussion will focus on the current Security Council mandate for Iraq and specific agency projects underway, whether the Security Council mandate provides the basis for an expanded UN role in Iraq, and what forms an expanded role might take. These questions and more will be considered at this event hosted by UNA-USA's Council of Organizations and the Henry L. Stimson Center.

The Council of Organizations, a division of the United Nations Association of the USA, is a coalition of more than 100 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with interests in education, religion, labor, sustainable development, human rights, health and women's issues, that share the common goals of promoting greater public awareness about global issues and strengthening the United States-United Nations relationship.
