The State of Emergency in Pakistan
| Date | Thursday, November 8, 2007 |
| Location | Senate Capitol, Room SC 4 |
Ambassador Teresita Schaffer, director of the
South Asia Program at the Center for Strategic and International
Studies and former deputy assistant secretary of state for South Asia, will join
us for a discussion on the current state of emergency in Pakistan. With
increasing violence in the northwest provinces and political turmoil in
Islamabad, is the declared state of emergency an attempt
by Musharraf to quell political dissent and maintain his position of power, or
is the current political climate a serious threat to Pakistan’s
stability? Is the recent surge in extremist violence a contained and limited
threat, or left unchecked, will it consume the entire state? In what ways can
U.S. financial assistance and
foreign policy be altered to better serve U.S. national interests and promote a stable and
democratic Pakistan?
