The Rise of China and Taiwan's
Response:
Implications for the United States
Featuring
Dr. Ger
Yeong-kuang
Professor, National Taiwan University and Member,
Control Yuan
The importance of the rise of the People's Republic of China is obvious to all, whether from a political, economic or security perspective. What is less obvious to Americans is not only how that crucial phenomenon is viewed in Taiwan but how Taiwan is responding to it. Dr. Ger Yeong-kuang, a noted scholar at the National Taiwan University and Member of the Control Yuan, will address that question as well as the implications for the United States.
Dr. Ger Yeong-kuang received his PhD from the University of
Wisconsin and has had a distinguished career as a political scientist and member
of various boards and review committees dealing with Asian matters, including
specifically Mainland affairs. He has held important positions in various
branches of the government in Taipei as well as having been a member of the KMT
central committee for 15 years. He also has been a central figure in the World
League for Freedom and Democracy over the past twenty years. Dr. Ger has written
widely on subjects ranging from politics in Taiwan to matters of security,
ideology and democratic development. As a Member of the Control Yuan, he has
been deeply involved in cross-Strait issues as well as such topics as how to
promote Taiwan's security stakes and claims in the South China Sea.
