July 22, 2011 - Dr. Terence Roehrig joined us for a discussion on the Korean Northern Limit Line - a disputed maritime border between North and South Korea. Dr. Roehrig is a Professor in National Security Affairs at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. He writes frequently about the Korean peninsula, including several books and the monograph, Korean Dispute Over the Northern Limit Line: Security, Economics, or International Law?
What are the origins of the North and South Korea dispute over the Northern Limit Line, and how likely is it to become a flashpoint for a larger conflict? How have the sinking of the ROKS Cheonan and the shelling of Yeonpyeong impacted the chances for increased economic and political integration on the peninsula? Do these events reflect a trend of escalation by North Korea or are they isolated occurrences for short term political gain?
Security for a New Century is a nonpartisan discussion group for Congress. We meet regularly with U.S. and international policy professionals to discuss the post-Cold War and post-9/11 security environment. All discussions are OFF-THE-RECORD. It is not an advocacy venue.
