(Re)Building Police, Courts, and Corrections After Conflict

Over the last decade or so, the UN Security Council has given complex UN peace operations broad mandates in police development, followed by mandates to help restore justice systems and eventually for advisory support to national prison systems. The US government has also increased its programming in these areas. This seminar will discuss the achievements and challenges of rebuilding criminal justice and rule of law in post-conflict settings, especially where complex peace operations are deployed. Discussion will build from the conclusions of a recent Stimson study, Understanding Impact of Police, Justice and Corrections Components in UN Peace Operations.
