Iraq, Refugees and Regional Stability

Dana Graber Ladek, from the International Organization on Migration, and Kristele Younes, from Refugees International, will discuss the refugee crisis unfolding in Iraq and neighboring countries. Iraq is experiencing the worst human displacement in its history, with almost 2.2 million people displaced within its borders and an additional two million who have fled the country to the surrounding region. Despite the growing numbers of refugees, and concerns in the region about growing potential for destabilization past Iraq’s borders, the international community continues to provide limited assistance to Iraqi refugees. What is the displacement situation across the region and, more specifically, in Iraq? What are the challenges humanitarian agencies (NGOs, the UN, international organizations, etc.) face in assisting displaced populations? What could the US Government be doing to alleviate the situation?
