April 19, 2011 — Christine Fair joined us for a briefing on India's influence in Afghanistan. Dr. Fair is a professor at the Center for Peace and Security Studies within Georgetown's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. Dr. Fair is a former political officer to the United Nations Assistance Mission to Afghanistan in Kabul. Her research focuses on political and military affairs in South Asia, and she has published numerous articles covering a range of security issues in Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan.
What is the current status of India-Afghanistan relations? How important is a stable Afghanistan to India's security and regional goals? What are India's current interests in Afghanistan and how does it go about achieving them? How are Indian ambitions connected to an active US and NATO presence in Afghanistan? Can a strong Indian influence help achieve US goals? To what extent does influence in Afghanistan fuel the India-Pakistan rivalry?
Security for a New Century is a nonpartisan discussion group for Congress. We meet regularly with U.S. and international policy professionals to discuss the post-Cold War and post-9/11 security environment. All discussions are OFF-THE-RECORD. It is not an advocacy venue.
