India and China appear poised to dominate the global economy within the next fifty years if they
stay on their present trajectories. Yet both countries may face a future more uncertain, complicated,
and potentially conflicted than is generally recognized. Beijing and New Delhi have entered on the
early stages of a jarring economic transition that is creating new winners and losers and new policy
challenges in each country. As this transition accelerates, existing social institutions have little time
to adapt, opening up possibilities for violent change. What institutions currently exist to prevent
such potential upheavals? Will new institutions need to be created to manage the challenges ahead?

Prem Shankar Jha is a former information advisor to the prime minister of India, and former
editor of and contributor to The Hindu, Hindustan Times, Economic Times, and Financial Express.
He has been a visiting fellow at the Fairbank Center at Harvard University and the visiting
chair in India’s Political Economics at the Institute of Political Studies in Paris.
