The Indian Ocean is a region of increasing importance to world commerce, energy security, and environmental concerns, as well as one under threat from piracy, terrorism and resource exploitation.  The countries along its rim, many of them in critical economic and political transitions, are important players in determining how these challenges will be managed. The Indian Ocean story reminds us of globalization’s effects on local developments, while local and regional dynamics have a global impact.

The Indian Ocean: Resource and Governance Challenges draws together contemporary perspectives from Northeast Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the United States on the current realities and emerging concerns in the Indian Ocean region.  Diverse experts address a variety of maritime concerns: fisheries, livelihoods, and food security; environmental degradation; maritime security cooperation; and piracy and terrorism, as well as examine their effect on one another.
