Mr. Andrew Gilmour, Senior Analyst, National Intelligence Council

Islam and Politics draws together contemporary perspectives from the Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the United States on various aspects of the relationship between religious identity and values, and ideologies of social and political governance in the Muslim world. The volume includes essays on Islamist political movements in Egypt, madrassah reform in Pakistan, the role of religion in Afghan statecraft, insurgencies in Muslim areas of Thailand and the Philippines, and ideologies of militant mobilization in Islamic religious thought.

In a time of outreach by US leaders to the Muslim world, Islam and Politics seeks to offer the non-expert Western reader an accurate glimpse into contemporary Muslim thinking about issues at the forefront of Western concern, and to bring to light some important aspects of the discussion within the Muslim world that have been ignored by Western opinion. Among the themes that recur are wide regional, national and ideological variations; the political rather than religious character of mobilization; the wide range of opinion on violence; and the wide distribution of anti-Western sentiment, even among secular liberals.

Dr. Radwan A. Masmoudi has written and published several papers on the subject of democracy, diversity, human rights, and tolerance in Islam.

Mr. Andrew Gilmour prepares and coordinates long-range, strategic trends assessments for senior US Government policymakers and strategic planners.
