Japanese Security Policy: Continuity or Change?

Col. Tatsuya Arima, who will soon be completing a two-month fellowship at the Stimson Center, will reflect on his research examining U.S. and regional views on recent developments in Japanese security policy and Northeast Asian security. During his fellowship, Col. Arima met with numerous local experts to discuss issues such as the changing role of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces (JSDF), regional missile defense, the North Korean nuclear crisis, and the impact of U.S. military transformation on East Asia. Based on these discussions, Col. Arima will share his perspective on whether a fundamental shift in Japanese security policy can be expected in the near future. He will also elaborate on how Japan's policy will impact the range of JSDF capabilities and contributions to international security in the next ten years.

Col. Arima's presentation was based on the following paper prepared during his Stimson Fellowship titled,Japanese Security Policy in the Next Ten Years.
