For the last 50 years, the US-Japan alliance has served as the cornerstone of peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region. In this context, the recent tension between Tokyo and Washington over the relocation of the US Marines Air Station in Futenma stirred concerns, although quiet, in the region. Now that the two governments have reached an agreement on the Futenma relocation and are moving forward, what tasks must both countries tackle to ensure that the US-Japan alliance continues to maintain peace and stability in the region? Mr. Mitchell, currently the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, and key author of the Clinton Administration’s 1998 East Asia Strategy Report, will share his perspectives.

The trip included meetings at the Asian Development Bank’s headquarters in Manila; the ADB Environmental Operations Center in Bangkok; the Mekong River Commission in Vientiane, Laos, and at Yunnan University in Kunming—the capital of China’s Yunnan Province.
