Marine Corps Preparation For The 2014 Quadrennial Defense Review
January 22, 2013
The Quadrennial Defense Review is how the Pentagon decides what it should look like in the future. The 2014 QDR will be the first conducted under the constraints of the budget deals on defense spending and as the war in Afghanistan draws down.
This event comes at the beginning of the Marine Corps' QDR efforts, which include grappling with how to keep the lessons of a decade of ground combat, prepare for an uncertain future, and how it will relate to its sister military services.
Major General Kenneth McKenzie began serving as the Marine Corps' representative to the Quadrennial Defense Review in August 2012. A career infantry officer, MajGen McKenzie commanded a Marine Expeditionary Unit in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and served on the staff of multiple Commandants of the Marine Corps, as well as Central Command. He wrote a book on how the 2001 QDR should deal with asymmetric warfare as part of the National Defense University's working group.
