To help Caribbean states implement UN Security Council Resolution 1540, the Stimson Center, the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) co-hosted a two-day experts’ workshop in Kingston, Jamaica on export controls and maritime security. Thanks to the generous support of the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the US Department of Energy, representatives from twelve Caribbean governments joined various other regional and industry representatives to discuss the benefits and relevance of 1540 implementation.

In early 2008, the Stimson Center's Elizabeth Turpen led a bipartisan task force of experts to provide recommendations to the incoming administration about re-imagining and broadening the vision for the NNSA Laboratories to meet the dynamic security challenges of the 21st century. Dr. Turpen presented the Task Force's findings and discussed how a restructuring of the nuclear weapons complex will help to resolve the tension between President Obama's commitment to the vision of a nuclear free world and his assurances of maintaining a robust deterrent until such a world is attainable.
